Madeira vs California: Where Would You Rather Live in 2025?

Is Madeira the New California? A Light-Hearted Look at the Similarities

We are absolutely living our better second half of life here on the coast of… California—no, wait, Madeira! While it’s a fun question to ask whether Portugal as a whole is the new California, in this post, we focus specifically on Madeira. And in some ways, the answer might just be yes!

Of course, Madeira is its own unique and wonderful place. By making these comparisons, we’re simply highlighting some of the charms that Madeira offers. Think of this as a light-hearted Venn diagram, exploring where Madeira and California intersect.

The Climate and Sunshine

One of the strongest similarities between Madeira and coastal California is the climate. Madeira enjoys year-round pleasant weather, very similar to places like San Diego. Expect summer temperatures around 78°F and winter temperatures hovering near 66°F. With over 2,300 hours of sunshine each year, Madeira truly is a sun-seeker’s paradise.

The island’s rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and stunning ocean views mirror California’s coastal beauty. Whether you’re taking in the scenery from the marina, exploring the mountainous interior, or strolling through lush parks, Madeira offers an outdoor lifestyle very much like California—only smaller, more intimate, and far less crowded.

Fresh Produce and Farmers Markets

Much like California’s famous farmers markets, Madeira offers an abundance of fresh, high-quality, organic produce. From the island’s beloved bananas to passion fruit and exotic varieties many have never even heard of, the island’s rich volcanic soil produces a bounty of fruits and vegetables year-round.

The culture here embraces fresh eating. Just like Californians, Madeirans enjoy heading to the market to select vibrant, locally grown produce for their families. The island’s nutrient-rich soil means that nearly anything grows here—and it grows deliciously.

Outdoor Living and Natural Beauty

Madeira offers an unparalleled outdoor lifestyle. Whether you prefer hiking its famous levadas (irrigation channels), diving into the ocean, or exploring the scenic mountains, the island is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

The variety of landscapes here is astounding. From rocky beaches to golden sands on nearby islands, from soaring mountains to lush green valleys—Madeira’s natural diversity rivals that of California.

Dining alfresco is also a big part of life here. With open windows, no need for screens (no bugs!), and stunning terraces, you truly enjoy the outdoor living lifestyle that California is so famous for.

Glamour and Elegance

Here’s where Madeira channels its “Old California” vibes. The island feels like stepping back into a glamorous 1950s California—a place where sunshine, well-dressed locals, and refined leisure create an elegant atmosphere.

Cruise ships dock regularly in Funchal, adding to the glamorous, vacation-like vibe. Even The Love Boat makes an appearance, and you can hear the iconic Love Boat song echoing through the port.

Madeira boasts world-class accommodations like the Savoy Palace Hotel, voted the best hotel in Europe, and the historic Reid’s Palace, which has hosted celebrities like Winston Churchill. In Calheta, you’ll find one of our personal favorites—the beautiful Saccharum Hotel.

Funchal’s Michelin-starred restaurants, elegant terraces, and locals who take pride in dressing well for everyday outings all contribute to this sophisticated, “Mad Men”-era feel.

A More Relaxed, Safer, Affordable Lifestyle

While Madeira offers many of the best parts of California, it leaves behind some of the challenges. Here, you won’t find extreme weather, high crime rates, or overwhelming political drama. Instead, you enjoy a more relaxed pace of life, safer communities, and a far more affordable cost of living.

In the End, Madeira Is Madeira

Is Madeira the new California? In many delightful ways, yes. But of course, there’s no true comparison for this extraordinary island. The Portuguese culture, rich history, and unique semi-autonomous identity make Madeira a place unlike any other.

While the climate, geography, and lifestyle might remind you of California’s glory days, Madeira offers its own magical charm—a perfect blend of natural beauty, culture, and an enviable quality of life.
