“Was It All Worth It?” – Reflecting on Life Two and a Half Years After Early Retirement and Moving Abroad
At 50, we made a leap many dream of but few pursue. We left our careers, sold everything, and moved abroad to Madeira, Portugal, in search of what we call a “better Second Half of Life.” Now, after two and a half years, it’s time to reflect: if we had to go back to our old lives tomorrow, would we regret our decision? Spoiler alert—it was absolutely worth it! Here’s why.
Life Experiences Beyond the Comfort Zone
One of the first things that comes to mind is how much our lives have expanded. Meeting people from all over the world, we’ve connected with like-minded adventurers and explorers and experienced the richness of different cultures. In North America, we lived in a bit of an “echo chamber,” surrounded by similar routines, conversations, and environments. Now, we’re sharing stories, learning new perspectives, and living a truly varied life. When you’re in the same place, you often mirror the habits and values of those around you. But moving abroad gives you a new appreciation for other ways of life. It’s been incredible to break out of that comfort zone and realize that people everywhere are also seeking meaning, adventure, and connection.
A Complete Reset of Pace and Perspective
Leaving the fast-paced North American lifestyle behind has brought us a welcomed reset. The relaxed pace of life here in Europe—and especially Madeira—allows us to slow down and enjoy each day as it comes. If we ever did return to our old lives, we know we’d approach it with a whole new mindset. One of the best parts of this change is that we now control our time. No more rigid schedules or constant pressures to keep up. Our days are as relaxed or as active as we choose, and this flexibility has given us back a sense of freedom that we hadn’t felt in years.
Embracing New Skills and Interests
Early retirement didn’t mean we stopped learning or working altogether—it just changed the form. We’ve been exploring new hobbies, from language learning to homemade kombucha and sauerkraut. Living in a place that offers fresh, local ingredients has encouraged us to get creative in the kitchen, and it’s been a rewarding (and delicious) way to care for our health. These new experiences make us feel, as we like to say, like we’re “reset to 25 again.” Our financial journey has also evolved. Moving here and taking time to meet people from different walks of life has taught us more about financial independence and investing. Each encounter broadens our understanding and opens new doors.
Health and Wellness, Redefined
Our health is better than ever, thanks to the warm climate, easy access to outdoor activities, and a slower, mindful lifestyle. We get to be outside almost every day, exploring this beautiful island and staying active. Unlike the extremes of North American seasons, Madeira’s weather allows for year-round activity, which has transformed our outlook on wellness. We’re not only healthier physically but also mentally more relaxed and content. Having the time and motivation to focus on healthy eating has also been a big factor. The availability of fresh foods encourages mindful choices, and the Mediterranean-inspired lifestyle supports longevity and vitality. It’s been a holistic reset that we’re thankful for every day.
Meeting Inspiring People
One of the most rewarding parts of our move has been meeting inspiring people who’ve also taken unconventional paths. Here, we’ve encountered fellow expats, retirees, and locals who have chosen to embrace a different way of life. Their stories and insights are a constant source of inspiration and validation, reminding us that there’s no one “right way” to live. This sense of community and shared values is a beautiful reminder that we’re not alone on this journey. Many of these people have chosen to leave their old careers behind, but they’ve picked up new interests and pursuits, from online businesses to creative projects. It’s refreshing and empowering to know that there’s a network of like-minded souls around us.
Why It Was Worth It
So, if we had to go back to our old lives tomorrow, would it have all been worth it? Absolutely. We’re better versions of ourselves now—wiser, healthier, and more in tune with what we truly want. We wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. And for those of you considering a similar move, know that it’s not as scary as it seems. Take small steps, gather information, and follow your instincts. Whether it’s trying something new, relocating, or retiring early, there’s so much more waiting for you in the “better Second Half of Life.” You only live once, and taking the leap can bring you a world of growth, joy, and fulfillment. Thank you for being part of our journey, and if you’re thinking about taking steps toward a better life abroad, remember: it’s absolutely worth it.
